Evaluation of preoperative oral carbohydrate administration on insulin resistance in off-pump coronary artery bypass patients: A randomised trial
European Journal of Anaesthesiology Oct 25, 2017
Lee B, et al. - This study investigated the impact of preoperative carbohydrate (CHO) intake on insulin resistance and free-fatty acid (FFA) concentrations in patients who underwent elective multi-vessel off-pump coronary revascularisation. At the beginning of the surgery, a preoperative CHO supplement vs. fasting significantly reduced insulin resistance and FFA concentrations, with the vanishing of these benefits following the operation. Furthermore, less myocardial injury occurred as a result of these beneficial effects, despite their transient nature.
