Temesgen E, et al. - In order to appraise the postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) utilization among victims of HIV at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, north-west Ethiopia, researchers conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study from May 17, 2018, to May 24, 2018, and carried out descriptive statistics to analyze the data using SPSS version 20. PEP was prescribed to a total of 309 patients during the study period; of these, 239 (77.34%) were occupational victims and 55 (17.8%) were rape victims, with one missing data. Occupational victims were exposed by blood and blood product splashes and equal exposure was reported in nurses and physicians, 14.24% and 13.92%, respectively. Victims in majority reported exposure at a health facility. Prescriptions containing three-drug regimens, tenofovir + lamivudine + efavirenz were made in 285 (92.23%) victims and two-drug regimens, zidovudine + lamivudine, were undertaken in 9 victims (2.91%). PEP initiation was observed within 72 hr, most within 24 hr. Despite the strong recommendations of the national and WHO guidelines, poor follow-up was reported leading to a lack of information regarding adherence.
