Evaluation of platelet-rich plasma vs intralesional steroid in treatment of alopecia areata
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology May 17, 2019
Albalat W, et al. - Researchers evaluated platelets rich plasma (PRP) vs intralesional corticosteroid (ILCs) regarding safety and efficacy in the treatment of alopecia areata (AA). They classified 80 patients of both sexes who had AA into Group I treated by ILCs and group II treated by (PRP). Both groups showed greater hair re-growth after treatment. In group I, improvement >70% was reported in 26 patients (65%) compared to 29 patients (72.5%) in group II. Both groups showed significant re-growth of pigmented hair and decrease in dystrophic hair by dermoscopic evaluation. At follow-up, relapse was reported in two (5%) patients in group II compared to 10 (25%) patients in group I. Findings suggest that for AA, platelets rich plasma represents a safe and promising therapeutic option.
