Evaluation of personality perception in men before and after facial cosmetic surgery
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Sep 26, 2019
Parsa KM, et al. - Researchers investigated whether facial cosmetic surgery in men is associated with perceptions of attractiveness, masculinity, and personality traits. In this survey study, 145 lay participants rated preoperative and postoperative photographs of 24 male patients who underwent facial cosmetic surgery. Respondents were men in majority (n = 81; 56%) between the ages of 25 and 34 years (n = 116; 80%). Results suggest that men undergoing facial cosmetic surgery may feel differences in perceived attractiveness, masculinity, and a variety of personality traits. Significant score increases were evident for perceived attractiveness, likeability, social skills, and trustworthiness when evaluating all facial cosmetic procedures together (upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, face-lift, brow-lift, neck-lift, rhinoplasty, and/or chin implant). Positive changes in perceived likeability and trustworthiness were observed with upper blepharoplasty. Decreased perception of risk-seeking was observed with lower blepharoplasty. Increased perception of likeability and trustworthiness were observed with face-lift. Increased perception of extroversion and masculinity were observed with neck-lift. Perceived attractiveness and likeability improved among patients who underwent rhinoplasty. These findings may expand the perception of cosmetic surgery’s association with societal perceptions of persona.
