Evaluation of opioid prescription patterns among patients undergoing thyroid surgery
Head & Neck Nov 26, 2020
McCrary HC, Newberry CI, Casazza GC, et al. - Since there is variability in opioid prescription patterns among surgeons performing thyroidectomy, researchers sought to assess opioid prescription rates and opioid use among hemithyroidectomy (HT) and total thyroidectomy (TT) patients. An electronic postoperative survey was distributed to evaluate opiate use among patients undergoing HT/TT. In total, 142 opiate naïve patients were involved, of which 75 (52.8%) underwent HT and 67 (47.1%) underwent TT. Following thyroid surgery, opioids are overprescribed. In mitigating the ongoing opioid crisis, avoidance of overprescribing is essential.
