Evaluation of nasal obstruction in children by acoustic rhinometry: A prospective study

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Sep 12, 2019

Distinguin L, Louis B, Baujat G, et al. - In this prospective study involving 83 children, researchers measured and compared nasal volume (NV) and minimal cross-sectional area between three groups of children: "achondroplasia", "Down syndrome" and "control," as well as correlated AR measurements with the obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI). The control group corresponded to children who were suspected of sleep disorder and had no craniofacial malformation. For children with achondroplasia, a negative association between the NV and the OAHI was observed. Investigators found that acoustic rhinometry (AR) is an efficient instrument for evaluating childhood nasal obstruction. Nasal obstruction in achondroplasia was associated with OAHI. AR could become a routine tool for nasal obstruction management of children with craniofacial malformations.
