Evaluation of malnutrition status and clinical indications in children with celiac disease: A cross-sectional study
BMC Pediatrics Apr 04, 2021
Setavand Z, Ekramzadeh M, Honar N., et al. - Given the scarcity of data on malnutrition, growth pattern, and dominant clinical nutrition-related symptoms in Iranian pediatrics with celiac disease (CD), researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to examine the anthropometric characteristics and clinical manifestations of children with CD. In total, 361 children were eligible and their anti-tissue transglutaminase (TGA-IgA) level, weight, height, and BMI were obtained from their medical records. According to the CDC's criteria, 18.3% of the children were short in stature, 28.8% were low in body weight, and 25.8% had a low BMI. The findings showed that growth failure, as well as low height, weight, and BMI, were common among children with CD. In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, a significant number of patients experienced skeletal pain and anemia. Abdominal pain (56.5%), skeletal pain (28%), constipation (27.4%), and anemia (23.8%) were the most commonly reported symptoms.
