Evaluation of gastric residual volume in fasting diabetic patients using gastric ultrasound
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 01, 2019
Sabry R, et al. - Among 50 patients scheduled for elective surgery under general anaesthesia, researchers assessed residual gastric volume in fasting diabetics. At least 6-year history of diabetes was reported by 25 patients included. A total of 25 healthy subjects were included as controls. In semi-sitting and right lateral positions, antral cross-sectional area was assessed via gastric ultrasound. The volume of gastric contents was aspirated and calculated by inserting nasogastric tube after induction of anaesthesia. In terms of antral cross-sectional area, residual gastric volume, risk of aspiration, and demographic data, both study groups were compared. According to the findings, higher residual gastric volume was detected in patients with long standing diabetes vs healthy controls after fasting 8 hours for elective surgery.
