Evaluation of gasless laparoscopy as a tool for minimal access surgery in low- to middle-income countries: A phase 2 non-inferiority randomized controlled study
Journal of American College of Surgeons Aug 23, 2020
Mishra A, Bains L, Jesudin G, et al. - Via performing a single-centre, non-blinded randomized control trial, researchers sought to compare gasless laparoscopic surgeries [GAL] with conventional Laparoscopic surgeries [COL] for general surgical procedures. Hundred patients who met the inclusion criteria were allocated into two groups and underwent minimal access surgery (Cholecystectomies and appendectomies). They groups did not show significant difference in the mean operating time. The GAL group had better intraoperative vital signs. Although slightly higher postoperative pain score was reported in the GAL group, no additional analgesics were required. These findings support the non-inferiority of GAL to COL and suggest its potential to be adopted in low resource settings.
