Evaluation of emergency department utilization for dermatologic conditions in the pediatric population within the United States from 2009‐2015
Pediatric Dermatology Apr 22, 2021
Collier EK, Yang JJ, Sangar S, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to identify key characteristics predicting emergency department (ED) utilization rates for dermatologic disorders by analyzing representative national data on pediatric ED visits to help mitigate their influence on an already burdened US healthcare system. In total, 44,554 sampled patient emergency department visits, consisting of patients less than 18 years of age, were gathered from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey between 2009 to 2015. In total, 13,681,691 pediatric dermatologic emergency department visits (weighted) were assessed over the seven‐year period, representing 6.4% of total pediatric emergency department visits. Cellulitis was the most common dermatologic diagnosis. In the pediatric population, dermatologic conditions continue to comprise a significant number of ED visits. The need to better guide or provide access to outpatient dermatologic care is highlighted by increased ED use by vulnerable pediatric populations.
