Evaluation of eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergies among the grade-7 children of Iqaluit
Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology Apr 26, 2019
Ahmed A, et al. - In this cross-sectional study of grade seven students attending schools in Iqaluit, researchers determined the prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema and allergies. They reported a 5.2% prevalence of current asthma, with all cases being males and having a previous respiratory hospitalization and 2/3 of overall cases were Inuit. For allergic rhinitis, the current prevalence was 8.6%, 60% of the cases belonged to mixed Inuit/Caucasian ethnicity and there was no single case among the non-Inuit. A female predominance 3:2 was evident. They reported a 27.6% prevalence of eczema currently, with half of the cases among the mixed ethnicity (13.8% of that group), followed by Inuit (8.6%). Across various ethnicities living at the same subarctic environment, variations were seen in the prevalence and risk factors of asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema, these differences possibly associate with various likely explanations like genetic, gene-environment interaction and/or lifestyle factors.
