Evaluation of aspiration in infants with laryngomalacia and recurrent respiratory and feeding difficulties
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Feb 27, 2019
Irace AL, et al. - A sum of 112 children were estimated to assess the prevalence of aspiration in cases with laryngomalacia exhibiting recurrent respiratory issues and/or feeding difficulty from December 1, 2016, to September 30, 2017. They noted that 90.1% of cases had swallowing dysfunction during the modified barium swallow (MBS) study. They found a significant relation of epilepsy or seizures, laryngeal cleft, and premature birth with abnormal MBS findings. They identified aspiration in 42.3% of subjects. They also reported that almost all of those candidates aspirated silently.
