Evaluation of allergic disease prevalence and related risk factors in children with autoimmune thyroiditis
International Archives of Allergy and Immunology Apr 22, 2021
Ademhan Tural D, Ucakturk SA, Guvenir H, et al. - Since allergic and autoimmune diseases are caused by an impaired immunological response resulting from different types of T-helper (Th) cells, researchers sought to examine the frequency of allergic diseases in children with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT). Symptoms of allergic diseases were examined by the (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) ISAAC questionnaire. The questionnaire was given to 300 children with AT and 300 children with no known autoimmune disease as a control group. Asthma, wheezing in the previous year, wheezing with exercise, disease-free night cough, and night cough were all significantly less common in AT patients. Except for physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis, patients with AT have significantly fewer allergic rhinitis symptoms. Children with AT had significantly lower rates of asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms. AT lowers the risk of allergic diseases.
