Evaluation and management of knee dislocation in the emergency department
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Nov 14, 2019
Gottlieb M, et al. - In this article, researchers sought to report a review of the diagnosis and management of knee dislocation, a potentially limb-threatening injury, for the emergency provider. Knee dislocation is a potentially dangerous medical condition and hence its rapid diagnosis and management are mandatory. They identified an uncommon occurrence of knee dislocations. They suggest undertaking a thorough history and examination, as 50% of dislocations may have reduced before arrival to the emergency department. In the emergency department setting, a quick reduction of knee dislocations is recommended. Vascular injury can not be excluded from the presence of equal pulses, and serial vascular examinations and evaluation with ankle-brachial indices are recommended in all patients. Computed tomographic angiography should be performed on those with abnormal ankle-brachial indices. Radiographs are important for identifying any fractures, while MRI may be deferred until after admission.
