Evaluating the prognostic significance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in solid tumor: Practice of a standardized method from the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarkers Working Group
Cancer Management and Research Jul 27, 2019
Liu JY, et al. - Researchers sought to examine methods of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) assessment in addition to determining their prognostic significance in gastric cancer (GC). H&E evaluation was done to semi-quantitatively determine the percentage of stromal TILs (psTIL). Two independent cohorts of breast cancer (n=240) and GC (n=481) were screened for psTIL characterization. According to the assessment method, TILs could be demonstrably differentiated from other stromal areas and surrounding tumor nests. Furthermore, it is reproducible, could be determined easily, and could be performed quickly. For psTIL in GC, a two-grade scale was suitable to be divided into low and high subgroups by using the median value of 10% as the threshold in GC. They noted no serosa invasion, earlier TNM stage and better survival state, and a favorable prognosis in correlation to high psTIL. They identified a beneficial overall survival of high psTIL in a linear manner with improved survival in correlation to increasing TILs infiltrates. Outcomes thereby suggest TILs as a valuable reproducible method for assessment that can potentially be used to guide management.
