Evaluating the impact of implementing a clinical practice guideline for febrile infants with positive respiratory syncytial virus or enterovirus testing
Hospital Pediatrics Oct 15, 2017
DePorre A, et al. - An inquiry was set up with regard to the clinical practice patterns and patient outcomes among febrile low-risk infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection or enterovirus (EV) meningitis. This was performed after implementing a clinical practice guideline (CPG) that yielded recommendations for managing febrile infants with RSV infection and EV meningitis. The results shed light on the connection between the CPG implementation with decreased antibiotic exposure and hospital length of stay (LOS) among low-risk infants with EV meningitis. No related variations were noted in the proportion of infants undergoing lumbar puncture (LP), antibiotic exposure, or LOS among low-risk infants with RSV. In order to determine specific barriers and facilitators to effectively apply the diagnostic viral testing into medical decision-making for these infants.
