Etiologies, predictors and economic impact of 30 day readmissions among patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 04, 2018
Shah M, et al. - Given the significant economic impact of heart failure readmissions on healthcare, researchers determined etiologies and predictive factors for readmission in peripartum cardiomyopathy [PPCM] using the National Readmissions Database for 2013-2014 [NRD]. Readmissions in PPCM patients were primarily ascribed to cardiac etiologies. A 30-day readmission rate of 13% was noted. Thirty-day readmissions were independently predicted by long term anticoagulation [LTAC] use, multiparity and length of stay. In addition, the total charges attributed to readmission within 30 days were $16.67 million (total cost of stay for index admissions was $117.8 million, average cost for index admission was $16,892).
