Martel ML, et al. - Researchers reviewed 5-year (2012–2016) electronic medical record of ED patients presenting with altered mental status to assess The etiologies of altered mental status in ED patients initially presumed to be intoxicated with ethanol but found to have negative quantitative ethanol levels. They noted that in 5% of patients, the presumptive diagnosis of ethanol intoxication in patients presenting to the ED with altered mental status was inaccurate. The etiology of the altered mental status included illicit substances, psychiatric causes, medical causes, and trauma. They recommended performing rapid assessment of quantitative ethanol levels, breathalyzers could be preferred over serum testing.
