Etiological distribution and clinical features of fever of unknown origin with pulmonary lesions in South China
The Clinical Respiratory Journal Aug 03, 2019
Jiang Y, Huang J, Tan Y, et al. - Researchers focused on the etiological distribution as well as clinical characteristics of fever of unknown origin (FUO) with pulmonary lesions. They also assessed the efficiency of various diagnostic approaches for certain disease classes. Participants were recruited from the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health and included hospitalizations from July 2012 to December 2016 with fever ≥ 38.3°C that lasted ≥ 21 days, with definite pulmonary infiltration revealed on chest x-ray or computed tomography, and for whom, no definitive diagnosis could be made despite being checked for a week. Overall 104 patients having FUO with lung lesions were found, and 89.4% (93/104) were definitively diagnosed. In this study, most FUO with pulmonary lesions were found during infections and autoimmune diseases, and histopathology was identified as the most crucial diagnostic measure. In addition, lung biopsy must be promoted in multi-level hospitals in the future.
