Ethinyl estradiol vs estradiol valerate in combined oral contraceptives – Effect on glucose tolerance: A randomized, controlled clinical trial
Contraception Nov 18, 2020
Haverinen A, Kangasniemi M, Luiro K, et al. - In this study, the effects of two formulations of combined oral contraceptives, estradiol valerate (EV) and Ethinyl estradiol (EE) combined were compared with dienogest (DNG), and DNG-only, on glucose tolerance. Researchers conducted a randomized, controlled 9-week clinical trial enrolling a total of 59 women (56 women completed the study). No clinically significant differences were observed between EV and EE combined with DNG and DNG-only on glucose tolerance in healthy, young, normal-weight women, demonstrating that these preparations seem close to neutral regarding glucose metabolism when applied continuously for nine weeks.
