Etanercept and methotrexate as monotherapy or in combination for psoriatic arthritis: Primary results from a randomized, controlled phase 3 trial
Arthritis & Rheumatology Feb 15, 2019
Mease P, et al. - In this double-blind study, 851 individuals were studied to examine the efficiency of methotrexate monotherapy relative to etanercept monotherapy and also to evaluate the utility of combining methotrexate and etanercept in subjects with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). They noted significantly greater American College of Rheumatology (ACR)20 response and Minimal Disease Activity (MDA) responses at week 24 for etanercept monotherapy vs methotrexate monotherapy and for combination therapy vs methotrexate monotherapy. They observed the lesser radiographic progression with etanercept-containing arms as compared to methotrexate monotherapy at week 48. Overall, they concluded that combining methotrexate and etanercept did not improve etanercept efficacy.
