Estimating the prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia in acute coronary syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Jul 01, 2019
Kramer AI, et al. - Researchers intended to offer a stronger approximation of the prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in the acute coronary syndrome (ACS) population via a systematic review and meta-analysis. Peer-reviewed articles mentioning the prevalence of FH in ACS were identified from MEDLINE, EMBASE, Pubmed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Analyzing 22 studies, they found a 4.7% overall pooled prevalence of FH in ACS. Similar estimates of 5.0% and 5.5% were offered by DNA-based criteria and Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, respectively. FH was present in around 1 in 21 ACS patients, and a raised prevalence of 1 in 7 was noted among those ≤45 years. FH screening in the ACS population is therefore important.
