Estimated stroke-free survival of folic acid therapy for hypertensive adults: Projection based on the CSPPT
Hypertension Jan 08, 2020
Zhang T, Lin T, Wang Y, et al. - Researchers estimated lifetime incremental stroke-free survival for enalapril-folic acid vs enalapril alone via creating adjusted models for competing risks and an age-based time scale. To this end, they utilized data from 19,053 participants of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial, and found a modest gain in lifetime stroke-free survival in relation to enalapril plus folic acid treatment vs enalapril alone in patients with hypertension. In subgroup analyses, greater gain in stroke-free survival was reported in: younger patients, male patients, those with lower baseline folate concentrations, those with higher baseline systolic blood pressure, those with higher baseline total cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and those with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) C677T CT or TT genotype.
