Estimated impact of supervised injection facilities on overdose fatalities and healthcare costs in New York City
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Sep 27, 2019
Behrends CN, Paone D, Nolan ML, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the potential impact of implementing supervised injection facilities (SIFs) on opioid overdose fatalities and healthcare system costs in NYC. Using a deterministic model, that incorporated data from 2015 to 2016 NYC provisional overdose data (N = 1,852) and the literature, they projected the number of fatal opioid overdoses avoided by implementing SIFs in NYC. Observations suggest that opioid overdose fatalities could be prevented with optimally placed supervised injection facilities. Supervised injection facilities may result in saving healthcare costs from opioid overdoses. However, depending on the geographic characteristic of the local opioid epidemic, the overall impact of implementing SIFs may be limited. Multiple supervised injection facilities are required to tackle widespread opioid epidemics as in NYC.
