Estimated glomerular filtration rate and the risk of cancer
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Apr 11, 2019
Xu H, et al. – In this study involving 719,033 Swedes ages ≥ 40 years with no history of cancer, researchers examined the link between baseline eGFR and incidence of cancer. Participants were observed for over 3.3 million person-years, during which time 64,319 cases of cancer (affecting 9% of participants) were identified. The investigators noted a U-shaped link between eGFR and cancer incidence, and observed a significant association of lower eGFR strata with a higher risk of skin, urogenital, prostate, and hematologic cancers. Throughout follow-up, they reported significantly elevated risk of any cancer as well as of cancer of the skin (nonmelanoma) and urogenital cancer; however, these cancer risks were higher in the first 12 months post-registration. Overall, individuals with mild-to-severe chronic kidney disease had modestly higher cancer risk, driven primarily by skin and urogenital cancers, and this was only partially explained by bias.
