Estimated blood loss as a predictor of morbidity following benign hysterectomy
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 26, 2018
English EM, et al. - The variation in estimated blood loss (EBL) at the time of benign hysterectomy was examined and the association of blood loss with measures of utilization and complications was analyzed. Researchers recognized a significant variation in the percentage of benign hysterectomies with an EBL >400 mL (>90th percentile) across hospitals in Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC). An EBL >400 mL was observed to be associated with higher rates of utilization and complications. They suggested hospitals to identify modifying surgical practice to reduce the proportion of hysterectomies with an EBL >400 mL to improve efficiency and quality of care.
