Estimated 24-hour urinary sodium and potassium excretion in US adults

Cogswell ME, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the mean population sodium intake and to elucidate the urinary potassium excretion among the US randomly selected, nonpregnant participants aged 20 to 69 years in the examination component of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). It was determined that the overall mean 24-hour urinary sodium excretion was 3,608 mg. The secondary analyses by sex disclosed that the mean sodium excretion was 4,205 mg in men and 3,039 mg in women. The overall mean 24-hour urinary potassium excretion was 2,155 mg. Yielded results revealed that the estimated mean sodium intake was 3,608 mg per day.
