Esophageal cancer in patients under 50: A SEER analysis
Journal of Thoracic Disease Jun 17, 2018
Zeng Y, et al. - Researchers used the national Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, which is a large, multi-center dataset, to study the clinical features, outcomes and independent prognostic factors for esophageal cancer (EC) in patients under 50-year-old. Two patient groups ie, those under 50-year-old and those 50 years or older were compared with respect to demographics, histology, stage distribution, treatment, overall survival (OS), and esophageal cancer-specific survival (ECSS). They found that distinctive clinicopathological characteristics were shown by EC patients in both the groups. Although the younger cohort more often presented with stage III and IV disease, they had better survival rates. In patients under 50, the identified prognostic factors for ECSS were different from those in all age patients.
