Epilepsy and antiseizure medications increase all-cause mortality in dialysis patients in the United States

Kidney International Jun 20, 2019

Waddy SP, et al. - Using the United States Renal Data System, researchers examined patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with and without a diagnosis of epilepsy to evaluate mortality and antiseizure medication prescriptions among these subjects. In this retrospective cohort study, a high prevalence of epilepsy was reported in patients with ESRD treated with dialysis. Those with epilepsy had 1.11 times higher mortality risk than those without, after adjustment for confounders. Among patients who did not have a neurology consultation, a 14% increase in risk of death was reported in relation to an epilepsy diagnosis; this risk was reduced in patients with a neurology consultation. Increased mortality was observed in relation to prescription of gabapentin vs other antiseizure medications. Among dialysis patients with epilepsy, mortality may be attenuated via appropriate multidisciplinary care, treatment, and medication selection.
