Epidural compared with non-epidural analgesia and cardiopulmonary complications after colectomy: A retrospective cohort study of 20,880 patients using a national quality database
Journal of Clinical Anesthesia May 14, 2018
Cummings KC, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers evaluated any link between epidural analgesia (vs non-epidural) and complications after colectomy using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). From 2014–15 data, using propensity scores, 4176 patients undergoing colectomy with records indicating epidural analgesia were matched 1:4 to 16,704 patients without. Findings showed no overall link between epidural analgesia and reduced complications after colectomy. However, epidural analgesia was found to be related to fewer cardiopulmonary complications and shorter hospitalization in open colectomies.
