Epidural anesthesia is associated with increased complications in cystectomy patients: A NSQIP analysis
Urology Feb 16, 2020
Mishra K, Fernstrum A, Mahran A, et al. - The intent of this study was to distinguish differences in short-term results and readmission rates in cystectomy individuals managed with general anesthesia matched to those undergoing general anesthesia and adjuvant epidural anesthesia. Individuals who underwent a cystectomy with ileal conduit between 2014 and 2017 were recruited utilizing the National Surgical Quality Inpatient Program database. Approximately 2,956 individuals appeared our inclusion and exclusion criteria and eligible for propensity score matching. The data showed that adjuvant epidural anesthesia showed an increased odds of procedure-related complications compared with general anesthesia. Compared with individuals undergoing general anesthesia alone, cystectomy individuals who underwent general anesthesia plus epidural anesthesia showed a higher percentage of any procedural related complication without a variation in postoperative stay, reoperation rate, or readmission rate.
