Epidemiology of rosacea in a population‐based study of 161,269 German employees

International Journal of Dermatology Dec 16, 2021

Hilbring C, Augustin M, Kirsten N, et al. - The epidemiology and related cutaneous comorbidities of rosacea are investigated in Germany.

  • Between 2001 and 2016, voluntary dermatological full-body examinations were performed in more than 500 German companies by experienced dermatologists and recorded electronically.

  • Among a total of 161,269 participants (mean age was 43.2 ± 10.9 years; 55.5% male), 2.1% had rosacea (men: 2.1%, women 2.1%, mean age 50.7 ± 9.3 years).

  • There was a significant increase in the prevalence of rosacea with age (16–29 years: 0.3%; 30–39 years: 0.9%; 40–49 years: 2.0%; 50–59 years: 3.5%; 60–70 years: 5.7%).

  • In addition, a significant decreasing prevalence was recorded from skin type I toward type IV (skin type I: 3.2%; II: 2.2%; III: 1.5%; IV: 0.4%).

  • Dermatological comorbidities that were most frequently observed include: telangiectasia, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, acne, tinea pedis, psoriasis, spider veins, and hemangioma.

  • Overall findings suggest rosacea to be a common skin condition; its greatest prevalence was recorded above the age of 65 years.

  • Rosacea cases have an elevated risk for linked comorbidities.
