Epidemiology of non-esophageal eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases in symptomatic patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Feb 25, 2020
Licari A, Votto M, Scudeller L, et al. - Researchers assessed the epidemiology of non-esophageal eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs) (non-EoE EGIDs) among adults as well as children referred to outpatient clinics for gastrointestinal symptoms, via a systematic review and meta-analysis employing a protocol registered and published with the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO CRD42018111437). They identified cohort or cross-sectional studies assessing the incidence and prevalence of non-EoE EGIDs, from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINAHL. Of 576 articles identified, 10 studies including 13,377 participants were analyzed. In patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, the estimated overall prevalence of non-EoE EGIDs was 1.9%. Due to the prospective design of the examined studies, incidence rates could not be ascertained. Overall, findings call for more prospective, large-scale, multicenter investigations to assess reported data as well as to further inquire about the epidemiology of non-EoE EGIDs and their likely risk factors and comorbidities.
