Annals of Gastroenterology Aug 25, 2021
Alkhayyata M, Salehb MA, Coronadoa W, et al. - Using the Explorys database, neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the appendix were suggested to have an overall prevalence of 7 per 100,000 individuals in this population-based study in the US. The year January 2019-January 2020 had an incidence of 0.4 per 100,000 individuals. Relative to prior reports, higher rates are described herein which may be more precise as Explorys database is more comprehensive in nature.
Pancreatic NETs and luminal carcinoid tumors are the two divisions of gastroenteropancreatic NETs.
With appendix NETs (aNETs), following were the common associated symptoms: abdominal pain, acute appendicitis and nausea.
Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, neurofibromatosis type 1, family history of primary gastrointestinal cancer, Caucasian race, smoking, and female gender were identified as the significant risk factors for aNET.
