Epidemiology of Kawasaki disease before and after universal Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccinations were discontinued
Acta Pediatrica Sep 18, 2019
Pasma H, et al. - Researchers conducted this investigation to analyze the epidemiology of Kawasaki disease (KD) before and after the universal Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination ended in Finland in September 2006. For annual incidence rates, KD cases have been retrieved from national health registries from 1996-2016. From January 1, 1996, to August 30, 2006, 612,433 children born in the BCG vaccination era were compared with 604,163 born after BCG era, from September 1, 2006, to December 31, 2016. The mean age at diagnosis rose from 2.6 years to 3.0 years, and the proportion of children with KD under 5 years fell from 87% to 81%. According to findings, the discontinuation of the universal program for BCG vaccination did not change KD incidence rates. The increased diagnostic age may suggest that KD pathogenesis may be linked to BCG immunization-primed immunological pathways.
