Epidemiology of hepatitis e virus infection in a cohort of 4,023 immunocompromised patients
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Nov 28, 2019
Harritshøj LH, Hother CE, Sengeløv H, et al. - Researchers examined the prevalence of active, chronic and former hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections in a cohort of 4,023 immunocompromised patients at Rigshospitalet, Denmark. Further, they evaluated the association with transfusion-transmitted HEV and compared the HEV seroprevalence with healthy blood donors. They identified the HEV RNA prevalence of 0.15% and between 0.21-0.58% among transplantation patients. Evidence indicating chronic HEV infections or transfusion transmission was not identified. No association of HEV seroprevalence of 22% with the number of blood transfusions was observed. Higher HEV seroprevalence was observed than among age and gender-adjusted blood donors.
