Epidemiology, comorbidities, and outcomes of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in children in the United States
Pediatric Neurology Jan 29, 2020
Thavamani A, et al. - Given that posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is an increasingly recognized entity with certain identified predisposing factors in children, researchers desired to know the actual incidence, comorbidities, outcomes, and hospitalization charges among children, aged less than 20 years, in the United States. Eight hundred twenty-five pediatric hospitalizations related to posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome were captured in the Kids' Inpatient Database in 2016. Findings revealed that the incidence of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome-related hospitalizations is 0.04%. The most significant risk factors found to be related to posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome were hypertension and presence of renal disorder. A significant increase in hospitalization charges and increased length of stay was associated with the presence of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.
