Epidemiology, clinical presentation, risk factors, intensive care admission and outcomes of invasive meningococcal disease in England, 2010–2015
Vaccine Jun 08, 2018
Parikh SR, et al. - Researchers analyzed the trends related to epidemiology, clinical presentation, risk factors, intensive care admission and outcomes of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in England, from 2010–2015. A decline has been reported in the IMD incidence in England, from 1.8/100,000 in 2010/2011 to 1.1/100,000 in 2013/2014. For 73% of 3,411 laboratory-confirmed IMD cases reported between January 1, 2011 and June 30, 2015, the MenB was held accountable, followed by MenW, MenY and MenC. By capsular group and age, a variance was noted in the clinical presentation. Complement deficiency, asplenia or both, though rare, were reported as IMD risk factors. Intensive care was needed for nearly a third of cases, with highest rates reported in adults. The observed 28-day case fatality rate was 6.9%, with lowest rates observed in 0–14-year-olds and highest among 85+ year-olds.
