Epidemiology, characteristics and survival of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer in Asia: A population-based study

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Apr 15, 2019

Cheung KS, et al. - In this territory-wide retrospective cohort study, researchers ascertained the features and predictive factors and survival of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer (CRC) in Hong Kong. Participants in the study were patients (aged ≥40 years) with colonoscopies performed between 2005 and 2013 without a history of CRCs, inflammatory bowel disease and prior colectomy. Older age, male sex, history of colonic polyps, polypectomy/biopsy at index colonoscopy, surgical endoscopists and a higher center annual endoscopy volume were included predictive factors for PCCRC-3y. PCCRC-3y, proximal cancer location and certain patient factors were included independent predictive factors for cancer-specific mortality after CRC diagnosis. In Hong Kong, the PCCRC-3y rate was 7.9 %, with a high proportion (> 80%) of distal cancers and higher cancer-specific mortality compared to CRC detected.
