Epidemiology and risk factors of patients with types of acute coronary syndrome presenting to a tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Oct 28, 2019

Ralapanawa U, Kumarasiri PVR, Jayawickreme KP, et al. - Given that higher mortality rates and premature death attributed to Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) have been reported in South Asian countries, and the existence and influence of risk factors vary by type of ACS and there exists limited epidemiological studies in the Sri Lankan population, researchers performed this cross sectional descriptive analysis at the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, including patients presenting with ACS, to analyze epidemiological patterns and risk factors. Participants were 300 patients with a mean age of 61.3+/− 12.6. A higher link with all three types of ACS was exhibited by male gender vs female with a P value of 0.001. Findings revealed a significant connection of smoking and alcohol abuse with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Higher rates of hypertension and more probability to have a history of ACS or stable angina were observed in patients with non ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) or unstable angina (UA) vs STEMI patients. The likelihood of having dyslipidemia was more in patients with NSTEMI vs those with STEMI or UA.
