Epidemiology and outcomes of invasive mechanical ventilation without ICU admission in acute care hospitals in Texas: A population-based cohort study
Journal of Critical Care Oct 28, 2020
Oud L, et al. - Researchers undertook a retrospective cohort analysis to determine the use of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) without ICU admission (non-ICU) in acute care hospitals in the US as well as to assess its effect on the outcomes of patients. There were 136,728 IMV hospitalizations in total, of those, 4,531 (3.3%) were non-ICU. Findings revealed that in 1 in 30 IMV hospitalizations in acute care hospitals, non-ICU IMV was offered. Despite being younger and healthier than those admitted to ICU, non-ICU IMV hospitalizations had a markedly higher hospital mortality.
