Envelope or triangular flap for surgical removal of third molars? A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Jan 26, 2020
da Silva BCL, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers contrasted the triangular and envelope flaps in mandibular third molar surgery in relation to the pain, edema, and trismus. Assessed secondary outcomes included dehiscence, ecchymosis, alveolar osteitis, periodontal condition, and surgical time. The qualitative analysis comprised 20 studies, 18 of which were included in the meta-analyses. According to results, the flap design had no impact on pain, edema, trismus, dehiscence, or osteitis. Findings suggested an association of the triangular flap with a higher incidence of postoperative ecchymosis and lower periodontal probing depth on day 7 postoperative relative to the envelope flap in mandibular third molar surgeries.
