Enterococcus endophthalmitis: Clinical settings, antimicrobial susceptibility, and management outcomes
Retina Apr 24, 2020
Dave VP, Pathengay A, Braimah IZ, et al. - The clinical presentation and management outcome of patients with endophthalmitis caused by Enterococcus species were reported. Further, the susceptibility profile of the isolates was investigated. From January 2005 to May 2018, vitrectomy/vitreous biopsy, intravitreal antibiotic with or without additional procedures were performed on 29 cases [24 men (82.8%); Mean age at presentation: 32.89 ± 25.25 years (median 24 years)] with culture-proven Enterococcus endophthalmitis. Observations revealed common identification of Enterococcus in the setting of endophthalmitis after open globe injury. Vancomycin resistance was rarely observed. Only E. faecalis exhibited multidrug resistance pattern. Despite early and appropriate therapy, poor visual outcome is reported; this is due to inherent organism virulence.
