Enhancing the assessment of resiliency to suicide ideation among older adults: The development and initial validation of the Reasons for Living-Suicide Resiliency Scale (RFL-SR)
Clinical Gerontologist Dec 26, 2019
Wadhwa S, et al. - By performing a series of secondary analyses, researchers constructed a brief late-life suicide resiliency scale from the 69-item Reasons for Living Scale-Older Adult version (RFL-OA). Data obtained from a follow-up evaluation of nursing home residents in the Geriatric Suicide Ideation Scale development study, a trial of Interpersonal Psychotherapy with suicidal older adults, and a longitudinal investigation of risk and resiliency to late-life suicide ideation were combined to create the dataset. The investigators found a significant association of nine RFL-OA items with suicide ideation and a history of suicide behavior, and these items showed no high correlation with social desirability. The internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and construct validity of this scale was supported by psychometric analyses. Findings revealed strong psychometric properties of the items of the RFL-SR in older adults in clinical and community settings.
