Enhanced recovery after thoracic surgery is associated with improved adjuvant chemotherapy completion for non-small cell lung cancer
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Mar 27, 2019
Nelson DB, et al. - In this work, researchers tested their hypothesis that Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) would facilitate adjuvant chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). At a single institution, they implemented an ERAS pathway, starting with a transitional rollout in 2012, and full rollout in 2015. They identified 471 patients. Progressive shortening of the interval between lung resection and commencing adjuvant chemotherapy was observed after the transition era. As per multivariable regression, adjuvant therapy completion was correlated with the ERAS era, the transitional era, pN status, tumor grade and histology, age, and preoperative performance status. The findings indicate that ERAS facilitated delivery of adjuvant chemotherapy, with shortening of the interval to receive adjuvant chemotherapy and a greater rate of receiving four or more cycles.
