Enhanced recovery after surgery outcomes in minimally invasive non-hysterectomy gynecologic procedures
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 27, 2020
Peters A, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers determined the impacts of enhanced recovery after surgery (n = 196) pathway implementation vs conventional perioperative care (n = 214) in women undergoing laparoscopic minimally invasive non-hysterectomy gynecologic procedures. The sample consisted of women undergoing uterine-sparing laparoscopic gynecologic procedures for benign conditions (tubal/adnexal pathology, endometriosis or leiomyomas) during a 24-month period before and after enhanced recovery after surgery implementation at a tertiary care center. Same-day discharge rates increased by 9.4% following enhanced recovery after surgery implementation. In the enhanced recovery after surgery cohort, a nineteen-minute shorter postanesthesia care unit stay was recorded. Enhanced recovery after surgery implementation leads to increased same-day discharge rates and improved perioperative results without impacting 30-day morbidity in women undergoing laparoscopic minimally invasive non-hysterectomy gynecologic procedures.
