Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty vs high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy: A case-matched study
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Nov 19, 2019
Cheskin LJ, Hill C, Adam A, et al. - Since endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a safe and effective minimally invasive bariatric procedure, researchers compared weight loss in individuals undergoing ESG with that of matched individuals undergoing high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy (HIDLT). Study participants were matched 2/3:1 (HIDLT/ESG) by age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). For this case-matched study, 105 patients who had ESG + low-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy (LIDLT) between 2016 and 2018 were contrasted with 281 individuals who had HIDLT at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions from 2013 to 2014. The authors discovered that individuals who underwent ESG achieved significantly greater weight loss than those enlisted in HIDLT through 12 months of follow-up. ESG tends to be a beneficial choice for patients who experience difficulty complying with HIDLT.
