Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty vs high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy: A case-matched study
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Oct 03, 2019
Cheskin LJ, Hill C, Adam A, et al. - Given that endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a secure and efficient minimally invasive bariatric procedure, researchers conducted this case-matched study to compare weight loss in individuals undergoing ESG with that of matched individuals undergoing high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy (HIDLT). Study participants were matched 2/3:1 (HIDLT:ESG) by age, gender, and BMI. One hundred five patients with ESG + low-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy (LIDLT) between 2016 and 2018 were compared with 281 patients with HIDLT in the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions between 2013 and 2014. Investigators found that patients undergoing ESG accomplished considerably higher weight loss than patients registered in HIDLT through 12 months of follow-up. For patients who experience difficulty adhering to HIDLT, ESG appears to be a valuable alternative.
