Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy to treat congenital nasolacrimal canal dysplasia: A retrospective analysis in 40 children
BMC Ophthalmology Dec 08, 2019
Cui YH, Zhang CY, Liu W, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers examined the therapeutic safety and efficacy of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EN-DCR) to treat congenital nasolacrimal canal dysplasia (CNCD). The sample consisted of 40 children (50 eyes) with CNCD who had EN-DCR in the Department of Ophthalmology, Beijing Children’s Hospital, Capital Medical University, from February 2012 to March 2016. Under general anesthesia, all procedures were performed. The cure rate was 82.5% among 40 cases of bony nasolacrimal duct stenosis, while 80% of 10 cases of bony nasolacrimal duct atresia. CNCD is a type of CNLDO that fails to respond to conventional and conservative treatment. For children with CNCD, EN-DCR represents a safe and effective treatment. Furthermore, the combination of EN-DCR with lacrimal CT scanning offers advantages over traditional lacrimal surgery as it has a high success rate with low complications incidence. There have been no complications intraoperatively.
