Endoscopic alterations in Peyer's patches in patients with ulcerative colitis: A prospective, multicenter study
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Nov 22, 2019
Hiyama S, Iijima H, Sakakibara Y, et al. - Researchers sought to determine endoscopic features of Peyer's patches (PPs) on narrow-band imaging with magnifying endoscopy (NBI-ME) and examined how these are associated with clinical factors. They evaluated NBI-ME images of the villi of PPs according to the Villi Index in 105 patients with UC, 18 with Crohn's disease (CD), 16 with disease control (DC), and 33 healthy control (HC) individuals. Patients were divided into the Villi Index low (L-) and high (H-) types. Significantly higher proportions of patients with H-type PPs were noted among UC, CD, and DC patients than among HC patients. Endoscopic alterations in PPs on NBI-ME were observed among patients with UC, and there appeared a high risk of clinical relapse in correlation to highly altered appearance of PPs in patients with UC.
